Chapter 26: Chapter 26: Remember When?

Chapter 26: Remember When?

The final week of school passed as a blur for Lily. N.E.W.T’s were now over and she was definitely glad about that. They had not been an easy feat and she had counted down the days until they were over. But now she had them over with she was starting to feel sad. She only had two days left in Hogwarts, then she was leaving it forever. She didn’t want to go, Hogwarts had been her home for the past seven years, the first place she felt she belonged. She had no idea where she was going to go when she left. She was going into Auror training yes, but where was she going to live? She no longer had a home to return to since her parents had died.

The weather was gorgeous and the group of friends were relishing their last few days in the castle by strolling around the grounds every day. Just looking around the grounds made Lily feel sad, she couldn’t believe tomorrow was her last day here. Tomorrow they graduated then left on the train the next morning for the last time.

Once again they were walking around the lake, Lily holding into James as they stared out at the vast lake, remembering all the times they had spent there. Sirius sat down under the big tree at the lake’s edge and everyone followed. All of them were there this time, even Dan, Frank and Amelia had joined them for their last walk around the grounds.

“How many times have we sat under this tree?” Alice asked.

“No idea, I lost count after the first fifty or so,” James said with a laugh.

“Can you believe we are graduating tomorrow?” Emma asked.

“No, it feels like we only got here, and now we are leaving,” Remus said sadly.

“Do you remember our first day on the train? The first time we all met?” James asked with a smile.

“Yeah, and James was great ‘til he got his first glimpse of Lily then he changed. That minute or so I knew him before, they were the good times,” Sirius said with a laugh.

Lily definitely remembered her first day, it was hard to forget.

Lily walked shyly onto the platform. Running through a seemingly solid wall had scared her slightly but then she saw all the witches and wizards on the platform and she was terrified. She knew nothing about magic or wizards or Hogwarts but here she was about to go to this new school for witches.

She walked up to the huge red train that read ‘Hogwarts Express’ on the front. Her trunk was heavy and she pulled it onto the train with great difficulty. A kind looking girl came up behind her and smiled.

“Would you like a hand?” she asked.

“Yes please,” said Lily with a smile and the two girls carried the trunk until they reached a compartment with a trunk already inside. The girl opened the door and pulled the trunk inside with Lily’s help. When they stored it safely in the luggage rack at the top Lily turned again to the girl.

“Thanks. I’m Lily Evans, nice to meet you,” she said holding out her hand.

The girl smiled widely and shook Lily’s hand. “I’m Alice Osbourne,” she said. They both smile and sat down on the seats.

At eleven the train stared to move and Lily felt more nervous now she knew she was really on her way. The train journey was fun. Lily and Alice talked for ages about everything. Lily learned Alice was a pureblood witch and was an only child. She was learning a lot about the wizarding world and Hogwarts when the compartment door opened and another first year girl by the look of her walked in.

“Hi! Is there anyone sitting there? Everywhere else is full,” she asked.

Lily shook her head and the girl sat down.

“I’m Joanne Plunkett,” she introduced herself with a smile.

“Hi, I’m Lily Evans,” Lilt told her.

“I’m Alice Osbourne,” Alice said.

The three girls enjoyed the journey immensely until the door opened again, this time to reveal a boy. Alice sighed when she saw one of them and looked away.

“Sirius I will kill you!” said a boy with very untidy black hair and glasses. He looked around the compartment and smiled. “Then again, maybe not. Hi Alice, aren’t you going to introduce me to your friends?”

“Not unless it would make you go away,” Alice told him but he just shrugged. “Fine, Lily, Jo, this is James Potter, my very annoying neighbour,”

“Nice to meet you ladies, especially you Lily, you are very beautiful you know,” James said with a charming smile.

Lily couldn’t believe him. He was eleven for goodness sake and he was acting as if he was twenty. Lily rolled her eyes and turned away but she was happy that he had called her beautiful, she had never been called beautiful before.

“Hey James where did you get to? All I did was send you in to drop a frog, what is taking so long?” asked a new voice. Lily looked at the door and saw three more boys standing there. The one who had spoken had long black hair and grey eyes, the one behind him who looked very shy had a light brown colour hair and blue eyes and the last boy looked very excited and had mouse-coloured hair with blue eyes. The one who spoke looked around the compartment as James had and smiled widely.

“Why didn’t you tell us you had made new acquaintances James?” he asked.

“You were planning on putting a frog in our compartment?” Jo asked him coldly. “Bit immature,”

“We were until we realised it was occupied by three very pretty girls. Let me introduce myself, I am Sirius Black madam,” he said. Jo rolled her eyes and turned away.

“James take yourself and your friends out of our compartment,” Alice said angrily.

“Why Alice? We like it here and we would like to get to know your friends better,” James told her.

“If you don’t I will just have to write in my letter home that you were causing trouble on the train, and I don’t think your mother would be very happy to hear that would she?” Alice asked sweetly.

James gulped and stood up. “Ok, we'll go, but I don’t see why you are making such a big deal,” he said but Alice gave him a stern look and he left with Sirius and his friends behind him.

Lily and Alice were rolling around laughing as they remembered that first meeting.

“Poor James, intimidated by a girl and a threat to tell his mother, you were so easy to persuade,” Alice laughed.

“And still is,” Lily said with a smile as James pulled her in closer to him.

“You didn’t get on well together the first time you all met did you?” Emma said with a laugh.

“No, we hated them. It took over six years for us to like them even a little,” Alice said.

“Hey, we weren’t that bad, we were young and stupid,” Sirius said.

“Well you aren’t that young anymore but you’re still as stupid, if not more,” Lily said with a grin. They all sat there for hours laughing and remembering different things that had happened during their years together.

“Remember the first time Prongs asked Lily out? That was brilliant!” Sirius said and they all laughed as they remembered it.

“Yeah, in fourth year he was sure she liked him and felt the need to ask her publicly,” Remus laughed as James blushed slightly.

It was a warm day at the end of April. James was sitting under a tree by the lake with Sirius, Remus and Peter, but his attention was elsewhere. He was staring at a very pretty red-head sitting not so far away from him with her friends. He turned back to his friends when he heard his name.

“Prongs, why don’t you just ask Evans out instead of staring at her all day long?” Sirius asked him.

“You know what Padfoot, I think you’re right,” James said with a smile as he stood up, closely followed by Sirius, Remus and Peter. He walked over to where Lily was sitting smiling confidently.

“Hey Lily Flower,” he said.

“What do you want Potter? I’m not in the mood to be another victim for one of your childish pranks,” Lily told him without looking at him.

“You hurt me Lily, why would I play a prank on someone so beautiful?” he asked pretending to be shocked.

“You never seemed to have any problem for the last four years,” she told him.

“Well, I am going to make it up to you now and offer you a once in a life time chance,” James said with a smile.

“Oh yeah, and what is that? The chance to get rid of you?”

“No even better, I am giving you the chance to go out with me. Most girls would kill to have this golden opportunity. What do you say?” he asked.

“Potter, I am not most girls so there is no way I will ever go out with you. I don’t know what possessed you to ask me but no way in hell am I going to,” Lily told him.

“Come on Evans, what is wrong with you? You don’t know how lucky you are to be considered by me, it is really an honour,” James told her with a grin.

“There is nothing wrong with me Potter, I just don’t date arrogant, bullying toe-rags who always wants to be the centre of attention. So that rules you out completely Potter,” Lily told him, her temper rising. “Now if you don’t go away and leave us alone you will regret it,”

“Fine Evans, but remember you might never get another chance like this, are you sure you want to reject?” James asked. Lily didn’t reply but instead pulled out her wand and sent a jinx at him making him fly a few feet back across the ground and land in the lake. He stuck his head up out of the water, spluttering with the water that had gotten into his mouth.

“I’m sure Potter. I would date the giant squid before I date you,” Lily told him with a satisfied smirk before storming off, Jo and Alice following laughing.

“That was definitely worth the detention I got,” Lily said through her laughter.

“You never told me how your date with the giant squid went. Should I be jealous?” James asked with a smile.

“No, he wasn’t really my type. He couldn’t keep his tentacles to himself,” Lily said laughing again.

“How many times do you think James asked Lily out before she finally agreed?” Frank asked.

“Well over a thousand,” Remus said.

“I don’t think I want to know! I lost count after fifth year and by then it was four hundred,” Sirius said.

“You were pretty desperate man. I mean you made a complete fool out of yourself most of the time,” Dan said grinning.

“It was worth it in the end,” James said. “You mean to tell me if you saw someone like Lily walk past you you wouldn’t try everything you could do get her?”

“Maybe I would but I think I would have taken the hint after six hundred ‘no way’s” Dan said.

“I think Prongs holds the longest crush in the history of Hogwarts,” Remus said.

“And the most rejections by one girl!” Sirius added.

“Well I was right, she really did like me,” James said.

“No, after 1001 I felt sorry for you,” Lily said slyly. James turned to her in shock but she just laughed and kissed him.

“But then you grew on me,” Lily told him. He smiled and leaned in making to kiss her but instead started to tickle her, making her scream as she tried to get away from him. After ten minutes he relented and Lily sat back up, red from laughing so much.

“Do any of you know what you are going to do when you leave?” Emma asked.

“We are all going to be Aurors,” James said indicating to himself, Lily, Sirius and Remus.

“I’m going to be a Healer, I was accepted as an intern last week,” Alice told them. “What about you guys?” she asked the others.

“I was thinking of becoming a curse-breaker. It sounds cool,” Emma said.

“I’m going to be an Auror too,” said Frank.

“I was thinking of being a professional Quidditch player. I have a tryout for the Chudley Cannons in three weeks,” Dan told them.

“Well I still have another year to go here so I’m not sure,” Amelia said sadly. She wa the only one not graduating tomorrow.

They all looked expectantly at Peter who hadn’t said anything yet.

“I…I don’t know yet,” he said quietly.

“What? We are graduating tomorrow and you don’t know what career you are going to do?” Lily asked confused.

“Well…I don’t know I want to be yet, I’m still trying to find something,” he told them.

They all shrugged before Emma turned to them again.

“Does anyone have any plans yet besides jobs? Like living arrangements? Maybe even marriage?” she asked them with a smile hoping someone would have something to tell.

Alice and Frank looked at one another quickly. Frank nodded and Alice turned to everyone.

“Frank I and I are engaged!” she told them excitedly, looking like she was going to burst with happiness.

Lily and Emma squealed and jumped on Alice.

“Why didn’t you tell us?” Lily asked.

“When did this happen?” asked Emma.

“Let’s see the ring!” they both said. Alice laughed and showed a very beautiful engagement ring. It was gold with quite a large diamond in the middle of it. The girls screamed again and started laughing.

The boys were all clapping Frank on the back and congratulating him. Or in Sirius’ case, telling him he had made a very big mistake.

“So, when did you go and throw your life away?” Sirius asked him.

“Frank asked me on Monday night after all the N.E.W.T’s were over. It was so perfect!” Alice said excitedly.

“Why didn’t you say anything ‘til now?” James asked.

“We wanted to surprise you all at graduation but then we decided to say it now since you asked,” Frank said.

They all sat there until late in the evening, reliving more memories and funny incidents. They recalled some of the Marauders more brilliant pranks and laughed as hard as they had the day it had been pulled.

Lily was really going to miss this. Tomorrow was their last day together, then everyone would go their separate ways. She didn’t know if she would see all of them again, let alone together. No matter how many times they promised to stay in touch it would be hard with all of them seeking after their own new careers.

But they were all going to make the best of their time left together. There was no point dwelling on what might happen in the future, she had to live in the present. And right now the present involved her and all her friends enjoying their last day of school out in the grounds under the bright stars.

She even felt the ones who weren’t physically there were sharing the night with them, from the stars above.
