Chapter 5: Chapter 5: Truce

Chapter 5: Truce

James stood outside the common room waiting for Lily. He was quite nervous because he wasn’t sure if she would have calmed down much in the last hour. He just hoped she wouldn’t hex him again; he still hurt from the last one.

He turned around at the sound of the portrait hole opening. Lily appeared out of the small opening. James looked at her and knew she had been crying. He eyes were red and puffy and her hair was a mess, but to James she still looked beautiful. It hurt him to think she had been crying over him. He never wanted to hurt her.

“Hi Evans, ready to go?” he asked

“Yeah. I think we should start from the dungeons up. What do you think?” she asked not looking at him.

“Sounds good to me. Let’s go!” he said cheerfully

They walked along in silence until they reached the dungeons. Then James spoke.

“Look Lily, we have to work together a lot this year and it won’t work if we can’t even talk to one another. So I think we should call a truce,” he said holding out his hand.

Lily looked at him. He called me Lily? And was calling a truce? Maybe he has grown up a bit.

“Ok, truce,” she agreed shaking his hand.

James beamed. “Yes!” he thought. “We are making progress!”

They walked along in silence again, but this time Lily spoke.

“James,” she started, stopping so she could look at him. He stopped too, wondering what was wrong.

“James, I’m sorry for what I did earlier. I shouldn’t have hexed you. I just wasn’t having a good day and well…”

“I didn’t help?” he asked smiling

“Yeah, you could say that,” she laughed

James wanted to jump for joy. I made her laugh? This is great! And she called me James! Yes!

“I’m sorry too. I just kind of, I don’t know...” he said looking at her to see a sad look in her eyes.

“Lily, what’s wrong?” he asked kindly

“No-nothing,” she said quietly, but she wouldn’t meet his eyes.

“Are you sure? You look like you’ve been crying,”

“What? I haven’t been crying. Why would you think that?” she asked in a hurry, but still not looking at him

“Well, you’re eyes are all red and-“ he started

“They are? Oh no!” she said catching a look at her reflection in a mirror. She tried to wipe the tear streaks off her face and smooth her hair, but it wasn’t working.

“It’s ok Lily, you still look beautiful,” James said. He wanted to kick himself. “Why did I say that? Things were going well considering what happened earlier. Why did you have to ruin it you big idiot?”

Lily looked at him and smiled. “Why did I just smile at Potter? He doesn’t mean what he said. He is Potter. He couldn’t mean it. Could he?”

“Than-Thank you James,” she said weakly

They walked on together in silence checking every corridor for students. James kept glancing at Lily wondering what was wrong with her. “If she said she was sorry for earlier, she couldn’t have been crying about me. Right? Then who was she crying over? I’ll kill them! Whoever hurt her I’m going to kill them.” He really wanted to know who or what had made her so upset but he thought better of asking her again. “If she wants to tell you what is wrong she will. So don’t push it. Remember what Mooney said? You have to be friendly and kind to her. Don’t force her into anything,” said a little voice in his head.

Lily looked at James to see he had a worrying look in his eyes. “What is wrong with him?” she thought. “You are you idiot!” said a voice in her head.

“Robert Patterson broke up with me today,” she said. “Why did I just say that? This it POTTER! He will probably be delighted. He’ll probably give Robert a load of chocolate or something.”

James stopped in his tracks. Lily looked around at him.

“Wh-what? When did he do that? I thought he really liked you.”

“So did I. I caught him making out with Katie Chang in the halls before I ran into you. He told me he tried to tell me earlier but he couldn’t find me,” Lily said quietly

James looked murderous. He wanted to kill Robert for causing Lily pain. “That evil git! How dare he hurt my Lily. I’m going to kill him! Why would anyone do this to Lily? She doesn’t deserve that. I’m going to kill the prick!”

Lily looked at James. He didn’t seem happy about this. “Why did I have to say something? He is going to be twice as annoying now knowing I don’t have a boyfriend anymore.”

“So,” said Lily trying to change the subject. “When-“

“Did he give a reason why he wanted to break up with you?” James asked still looking really angry

“He said he thought I didn’t want to be with him anymore. That I wanted to be with someone else. But I told it was him who wanted to be with someone else. Then I walked away,” said Lily. She didn’t really want to talk about it again, especially not with James.

“Don’t mind him Lily. He doesn’t deserve you. You deserve someone better. He is just a jerk who used you. You don’t need him so don’t worry about it. It’s his loss after all,” said James looking directly at Lily.

Lily didn’t know what to what to say. “Maybe he has grown up.” “I think you like him. You should give him a chance. He isn’t the same guy he was last year,” said the voice in her head. “I DO NOT LIKE POTTER!” she said angrily to herself.

“So, when so you think we should have Hogsmeade weekend? Dumbledore said we could make a list of when we wanted to have them,” said Lily changing the subject.

James looked at her and knew she didn’t want to talk about Robert anymore so he didn’t push her.

“Well, the first one I think should be on Halloween. Give us all a break,” suggested James

“Yeah, then I think the next one should be a week before Christmas. Give students a chance to do some last minute shopping.”

“Then Valentine’s Day. Let couples get away from the school for a day,” said James not looking directly at Lily.

“Ok, so that’s three. We need one more. When do you think that should be?” Lily asked

“Eh…End of April maybe? Give students a break before exams?” James suggested

“Great! So that’s Hogsmeade covered,” said Lily conjuring a piece of parchment and writing down the dates they had picked.

“Dumbledore also said we have to have meetings with prefects once a week. What day would suit you best?” she asked

“Well Sirius and I have decided on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday for Quidditch practice so any other day,” he said looking at Lily who was smiling.

“Of course we have to work around the quidditch schedule. The famous James Potter has to have the perfect team! Can’t interfere with his practices!” said Lily smiling at him.

“Of course you can’t! I don’t need the practice, I’m already brilliant. But the team would fall apart without me! Besides you’re on the team too, you have to go to practice aswell,” he replied

Lily rolled her eyes at him, but was still smiling. Usually she would have scowled at him for his cockiness. “What is wrong with me?”

“So how about Saturday? Or will you need that for your detentions?” she asked

“Not yet. It’s only the second day. We haven’t got any yet. Sirius is very disappointed,” he laughed

“So Saturday for prefect meetings. What about tutor sessions?”

“Tutor sessions? No one said I would have to tutor anyone!” James said

“Yes they did. It was in the letter that came with your badge. Didn’t you read it?”

“I only had the chance to read the start before Sirius took it off me shouting about how I have disgraced him for coming Head Boy. He said I betrayed him,” James shrugged.

Lily laughed. “Well it said we had to choose one night a week to teach younger students in different subjects. So Monday, Tuesday or Thursday?”

“Monday, we have the least amount of classes that day so we will have less homework,” said James

“Like you do your homework the day you get it,” Lily said slyly before writing this down on her parchment aswell.

“So are there any more things we have to do or do they want to take up all our free time?” asked James looking at the list.

“Yes there is. We have to meet once a week to discuss different things and tell the other any ideas we have,”

“That only leaves one day out of the whole week to spare! Being Head Boy is harder than I thought,” sighed James

“What did you think it was going to be, walk around the school and give out detentions to everyone?” she asked smiling at his shock

“Well, no. But I didn’t think we had to do everything!”

“Well now you do and it’s too late to get out of it now! So which would you prefer Tuesday or Thursday?” she asked

“For what?”

“Our meetings idiot!”

“Oh. I don’t know, which do you have free?”

“Both, but I think I’d prefer Tuesday. Is that ok with you?”

“Yep! Which only leaves Thursday free,”

“Not really,” she said with a smile. She looked at James to see a look of shock on his face.

“What now?” he asked, exasperated

“We have to meet with Dumbledore every second Thursday to tell him any ideas we have or ask him any questions and them of course we have patrols every night of the week.”

“When are we going to get time to do homework or study for NEWTS?”

“Well, Dumbledore said things will lighten up as the year goes on. Of course you can always cancel a Quidditch practice,” she suggested trying to hide a smile

“No way! I can’t cancel Quidditch. It is the only thing that will keep me sane through all of this. Besides we have to win the cup again this year. I don’t feel like handing it over in my last year. We have to practice non stop. You too Evans,” he said with a smirk.

“Ha! I am great at Quidditch Potter! I don’t need to practice. I can catch the Snitch from anywhere. You on the other hand, I suggest you get in as much practice as possible before our first game,” she said smiling charmingly at him.

“Very funny Evans! Don’t get cocky-“

“You’re one to talk about being cocky,”

“I’m allowed to be. I’m the Captain. I can kick you off the team if I want,”

“You wouldn’t dare!”

“Oh really?”

“Yeah! You need me on that team. We have no chance if I’m not there. I seem to remember we never won the Cup ‘til I joined, even though you were on the team for three years before that,” she smirked

“It wasn’t my fault. I scored every game, it was the rest of the team. They were terrible. But when I was made Captain I made a great team-“

“That included me,” Lily smiled

“Ok it included you. The point is I make a great Captain and I picked a great team,” he said

“Yes we have a great team and we are going to win the cup again this year. No way am I leaving without it,” stated Lily.

“You know what Evans? I think that is one of the first things we’ve ever agreed on,” said James

“I think you’re right Potter. Wow, that felt weird to say,”

“You better get used to saying it. You’ll be saying it a lot from now on,” smiled James

Lily rolled her eyes but smiled.

Before they knew it they reached their own Head common room. They went inside and said goodnight before going into their separate rooms.

“Maybe this year won’t be so bad after all,” Lily thought closing her door.
