Hermione Granger/Remus Lupin

This is my One True Pairing in this fandom. It's my favorite for many reasons, even though canonically it's impossible, but we don't let that stop us when writing, do we? In fact, in all seven books, they seem to only speak directly to each other once, during the Shrieking Shack scene in Prisoner of Azkaban.

For one thing, they have similar interests and seem to have a lot in common, including a love of books, a compassion for others, and a studious disposition (though the latter is mostly conjecture given Remus's behavior as a professor, as what we know about him from his years at Hogwarts doesn't give much away in that regard). Often stories that pair these two have one or both of them fostering crushes on each other that gradually become known and acted on. There's also the fanon trope of soulmates, which often uses the plot device of every werewolf having a destined soulmate, though that soulmate could have existed during any time or place, so finding them is extremely rare.

Another thing I love about this pairing is the obstacles to overcome, which are a fun challenge as a writer. One such obstacle is that both of them are paired with other characters they clearly care for in the canon story. While I have enjoyed stories in the past that cast Ron and Tonks as adversaries (Hope's Span is Long on AO3 is a good example of this), I much prefer stories where their prior relationships fizzle, never began, or end in non acrimonious ways. This lets the reader enjoy the pairing story without feeling guilty for what happened to make way for them.

The age difference is another obstacle which can be mediated by various tropes, including time travel and soulmates. Some of my very favorite stories of this pairing are time travel stories, including (feel free to google them! They're off-site and I don't want to link too much off-site) Debt of Time (on FFN & AO3) and Chemistry and Timing (on FFN). I'm writing one but haven't started to post it anywhere yet. For the soulmate stories, I love Mine, Always (on FFN and AO3) and Moonlight (on FFN and AO3), and I am personally writing one myself. The one I'm writing I've started to call 'hard mode' in my head, because I've thrown every obstacle in my way that I can, mostly by accident--neither Hermione nor Remus had crushes before the story starts, Remus is married, and Hermione finds out she is his soulmate and hides it from him for the good of the Order. That one is called, appropriately, The Good Intentions Paving Company.

So, what do you like about this pairing? What could convince you to like it if you're on the fence? Does it remind you of any other pairings you like in this fandom or others?

I really enjoy reading this pairing, and my favourite fic is probably Misplaced Moony by ShayaLonnie. Teenage!Remus is just so adorable. I can't believe I haven't read Mine, Always. Great fic. They make a good couple as they're both serious, bookish characters who are usually gentle and compassionate but have a quiet ruthless streak. A similar pairing is Theo/Hermione--there's actually a recent fic featuring Werewolf!Theo/Hermione called You're Mine that Remus/Hermione fans would probably enjoy.

The Good Intentions Paving Company sounds intriguing.

I have a bunch of favorite fics in this pairing but I can't recommend Chemistry and Timing enough. It's a time travel fic where Hermione, as an Unspeakable working for the Ministry, has a Time Turner mishap that sends her back to 1993, right before the beginning of her third year at Hogwarts. She goes to Albus for help and is sent to stay with Remus in his suite as a way to help her not be lonely, and to keep her hidden (he'd been at the Ministry filling out paperwork where the accident happened, and she had run into him). Grown up PoA Remus + Hermione at I think 19 or 20 is super massively charming, and I adore that fic to bits and pieces. It has some great world building about time turners, and the reader knows what is going to happen throughout that year, as does Hermione--but Remus has no idea. So there's this ever-present weight behind every day that passes that is really compelling to read.

edit: I should say as much as I LOVE how sexy Mine, Always is, it involves a Remus whose bedroom behavior is so OOC I usually can't read past that first encounter, haha. I just cannot even with a Remus that uses the term 'baby' for a romantic partner ><

I had read halfway through Chemistry and Timing, and sensing impending angst, skipped to the end, so I kind of spoiled the story for myself. I think I would have enjoyed the story if I was in the mood for it--it was really well written, but I don't really enjoy angst much these days. Except when I'm writing it because I'm a big ol' hypocrite.

I bet I know (a couple of possible places) where you stopped! Interestingly, I don't think of it as that much of an angsty story, but I think that's because I probably have an artificially high bar of what counts, or maybe I don't consider it as angsty if the thing that could have happened doesn't happen in the end... hmm!

I ended up reading it again last night, from beginning to end, and it was very brilliantly written. I think I was expecting more angst than what I got, because it wasn't that bad when I did end up reading through it.

I'm now on a Remux/Hermione reading binge again--any other recommendations? :D

OH STRAP IN! (haha) Unfortunately I haven't got a ton of non racy ones. Sorry so many off-site links, but we'll help build up the archive again :)

A Bit of Sky by Shayalonnie - rated R
This fic has a fantastic explanation for why Peter was a traitor. Time travel, Hermione and some friends attempt to kill Voldemort and end up thrown back in time. She's sent back to the werewolf den Remus was currently sent undercover to, and ends up bitten and discovers she's his soulmate. This is a WiP but worth reading anyway. WiP

British Werewolf in Karnak by Nyruserra - rated R
This is something completely different. Hermione, Remus, and Bill Weasley all work in Egypt and are roommates. Sexual tension rises to an unbearable level, until they all reach breaking point. The journey to that breaking point and the result--superb. complete

Professor by SableUnstable - rated R
Hermione and Remus are in a new relationship, and she visits for a birthday surprise. Sirius Black has enchanted the desk Remus has just gotten as a present to present a very racy present of Hermione herself. Tagged possible non-con, but that is definitely precautionary. complete

Debt of Time by Shayalonnie - rated R
This isn't end-game Remus/Hermione, but it is a classic. Time travel where Hermione ends up being given a de-aging potion to grow up as James Potter's sister Mia. This fic has my favorite fanon plot device EVER (letter of intent) and the way it's implemented remains the most romantic Remus/Hermione moment in any fic ever, the end. Okay not the end, their first kiss is pretty freaking epic too. complete

Moonlight by Kittenshift17 - rated R
One of the best of the soulmate genre, not as long as the previous recs, full of UST until it's not. One of the most feral Remus portrayals in fic. complete

Darkest Desires by Lupinswolfie - rated R
Warning: I love this fic but it's a guilty pleasure. It has some non con and definitely Tonks bashing. Despite that, this is quite a fun read. The premise is that Moony and Remus are basically two sides of the same coin, and Moony claims Hermione as his mate, despite Remus being married to Tonks. complete

Obsession's Heartbreak by Lupinswolfie - rated R
Warning: I love this fic but it's a guilty pleasure. It has some non con and definitely Tonks and Ginny bashing. Worth reading, though! This is another Moony / Remus soulmate fic. In this one, Ginny and Tonks both try to drug Harry and Remus so they can seduce them. Hermione drinks Harry's version, Remus drinks his, but he and Hermione end up in bed, and Moony claims Hermione as his. Fallout is crazypants. Complete

Hungry Like the Wolf by TaraSoleil - rated T
This is a rare shorter time travel fic. Hermione travels back to the 70s and meets a young adult Remus thanks to a record that time travels when it plays a certain song. It's super charming. Complete

One Step Closer by Darsynia - rated T (language)
Hermione has been in love with Remus for years, but kept quiet. She ends up being Teddy's adoptive mother and spends two years after the Battle of Hogwarts looking for Remus, whose body was never found. The same night she's about to give up the search in favor of taking care of her son, she's left a clue that Remus is still alive. This is my love letter to book Remus, trying to reconcile him with fanon Remus. Complete

Oh man, I wish I could read Debt of Time but I am not a Sirius fan. I really want to know what happens in the story, because I get the feeling that it's really good, but I can't get over how much Sirius there is in this story and I'm not fond of it when authors give Hermione nicknames based on her given name. I've read half of these (and I remember your fic from before!) but the other half were great to discover!

I have one story of my own to recommend: it's This Business of Adulting by droid_girl. (rated M)
I'm not sure if you'll like it, but for me, as a geeky millennial tech worker it was an incredibly refreshing read of Harry Potter set in contemporary times.
