Harry Potter/Hermione Granger

Some Harry Potter fans have been rooting for Harry and Hermione to be together since the very beginning. In fact, when we first started reading the books, we thought we'd ship them until the end of time. As the stories progressed, however, our feelings began to change. We saw, while in the Harry Potter books, that they worked better as best friends, but in fanfiction, there's still a realm for them to exist romantically.

The romance between Harry and Hermione appeals to readers who enjoy a bond rooted first in friendship. Our favorite fanfic stories about the two can be canon as often as they can be AU. They work well together within the Harry Potter realm and outside of it.

Do you wish they'd ended up together in Rowling's world? Do you keep their relationship alive while reading fanfiction? Let's talk about it!

I wasn't a big fan of this ship until I watched a fanvideo in 2006 with the song 'Dirty Little Secret,' where it implied that Harry and Hermione loved each other very much romantically, but their friendship love for Ron left them unable to act on it.

It's not as good as videos nowadays but I went from skeptical to a believer by watching it. Here's a link, but I will take it down if youtube links are disallowed.

Personally, I don't prefer this "ship" because I think there is great value in their friendship, but I can see how Hermione and Harry would've been a better fit based on their interests and talents. Harry is intelligent and in his own way, an overachiever, just like Hermione. Ron has a certain sense of laziness about him that makes him and Hermione a strange match to me. When I was younger I thought Hermione and Ron were a great match, because admittedly, teenage me dated boys just like him - sort of dumb and nice, but clueless, overall. As an adult, I can't see how her relationship with Ron would be more fulfilling than a relationship with someone that is mentally her equal - someone like Harry.

This was the first ship I shipped, and I still read the occasional Harmony fic but I feel like this ship was more damaged by book 7 than any of the other ships that I read, maybe because it was the only canon-possible ship that I ever shipped. I feel like the problem with this ship is that Harry and Hermione get along so well there isn't much in the way of them developing a relationship (if you ignore the epilogue that is), unless you make evil OOC Weasleys or...something, so it's hard to write a long, drawn-out story. The most mostly-canon compliant fic I've read lately were one-shots, which is all the sustainable tension I can see with this ship. The epilogue-compliant fic are generally too depressing for me to read.

I feel you, Legion!

I honestly feel like the epilogue for Deathly Hallows was put in there for more casual fans. By that point, the franchise was the most popular fandom for fanfiction, and JKR as an author has always been particularly savvy in understanding that her fans can and will write whatever they want when it comes to her creations. The epilogue was a way to tie a bow for fans who didn't so much delve into the fandom aspect, in my opinion. People who write Harry/Draco and Hermione/Draco, two of the most popular ships then and now, were never ever going to stop no matter what fanon said, because their ships were always in flames in canon, haha.

As someone whose OTP is a pair that only ever spoke directly to each other in the third book (Remus/Hermione), Harry/Hermione is far more plausible to me than many other pairings, even with the way the books ended. It just depends on how far afield from book canon you're willing to go ;)

Really good point. I rewrote my current Dramione in entirety to be more canon-savvy. It's not easy.

I go pretty far from book canon. I read nothing but Remus/Hermione for a few months, and I ship Hermione with everyone from Snape to Percy to Regulus to Neville (and Draco of course) so my tastes aren't exactly what you'd call discriminate...

The fun of writing a shipping fic is twisting canon events to fit your ship, I think.

I was just watching the 7th movie for the first time recently, and I got such strong Harry/Hermione vibes. Harry/Hermione is practically canon. Hermione's going on about how fanciable Harry is in Half-Blood Prince and they're always hugging and stuff. They were together alone in a tent for over a month alone. I honestly can see the Epilogue written as Harry/Hermione and it totally would've made sense. When I talk about this with my fiance he says I sound like a deluded shipper (in an affectionate way of course), but considering my other ships this is practically sensible.

Harmony has been my OTP since book one, I haven't switched ships or went to canon, personally, I am glad that JK never wrote their romance as romance or love is not something that she is good at, and I think that would have ruined that ship for me. Especially, considering how she wrote the other relationships in her world. I think that she wrote a very believable and lovable ship, then wrote herself into a corner by book five, and didn't even mean to. I'm just glad there is an active harmony group out there for people who do ship them. I write fanfiction, make graphics, and draw for this ship. They are the first ship I shipped from the Harry Potter books.

Like Dido, I will go down with this ship. ~

Although I ship canon pairings, I have been a Harmony shipper from the beginning too. I agree with what Legion said about the last book - it has... changed my perspective in regards to these two. Their relationship in general is too beautiful. I love Ron even so because the trio are my absolute favorite characters, and I hate when it comes to Harmony fics, he is mainly bashed (and I see this with Ginny too sometimes). It's even a little hard for me to accept when he's killed off in stories just for Harry and Hermione to happen. On the other hand, I've read a few good fanfics that were good that ignored canon without having to resort to bashing or character death of either Ron or Ginny for this ship to happen. Anyway, I love Harry and Hermione's friendship just as well - like it serves or feeds my OTP just as if they're in a romantic relationship. I don't know how else to explain it, but overall, Harmony is still my favorite ship. I go down with this ship. :D

I like to pretend the last two books didn't happen tbh, but I would say it didn't change anything for me because I didn't feel like it was a growth there in the characters or the story if that makes sense. Tbh, I did not like Ron when I originally read the books, I think re-reading them and especially watching the movies is what made me love Ron (because Rupert is precious). I don't love bashing fics but I do read them from a very small selection of authors one of the is Keira Marcos. Most of the time I hate them, especially since most people can't write them. Like one very popular hamony writer is Robst, but his writing and bashing is over the top, so I am not a fan, even though I do think that he is obviously a great writer.

I don't like when Ron or Ginny are killed off either, unless it is written well which is almost never done. I know a good bit of fics that don't have any death or bashing in it. I think Ginny is a character I can take or leave but Bonnie is someone who made me like her more. Which is funny because during the movies despite being a Harry and Hermione fan I think that Daniel and Emma made me not like the movies.
