"Did I just miss something?" Harry asks looking between us with a small smile on his lips.
I sighed as well as the laughter died away.
"Well, Willow, it turns out I have a rather big surprise for you," started Harry, but I cut him off.
"I'm a witch," I answered bluntly. I had no choice but to believe now. And I was actually happy about it. Had my mum been one? Had he been one? Oh, no. He would have been a wizard.
Seems like I'm getting the hang of things.
"Albus, what's wrong?" I asked, my eyebrows coming together slightly with worry.
"Nothing," he mumbled, not looking at me.
I gave a questionable look to Harry and hoped he'd fill me in. His eyebrows also showed worry.
"I'm not sure how to say this so I'll just come out and say it...you're a squib," Harry said lightly, watching for my reaction.
Yes, I know it sounds incredibly girly and I wasn't exactly girly but being a girl makes things rather difficult to avoid.
Like giggling at the word "squib."
Albus and Harry exchanged shocked glances and turned to me like I'd totally lost my bonkers. Of course, I stopped immediatly when I noticed their faces.
"I-I'm sorry," I said quietly, wringing my hands again, "I don't know what a squib is."
Harry and Albus both frowned
"A squib is someone who has been born from a wizard family..but can do no magic," Harry said quietly.
This time I did not laugh.
I looked over at Albus and noticed he was avoiding my gaze again.
"But..but I did magic!" I exclaimed, angry that they would call me such a thing.
I wish I'd never giggled. I have shamed myself.
"I healed my hand with my wings! That's magic!"
Harry raised his eyebrows. "You did magic with your wings?"
Harry looked over at his son and gave him a stern glare. "Is this true?"
Albus nodded. "But I don't think she could do magic before she got those wings. She can only heal things."
My jaw dropped. And to think I thought of him as a friend for a minute there.
I glanced back at Harry and my jaw dropped even more. He was nodding like he understood what his son meant. What was it with these people?!
"Willow, do you think you could focus on Albus' hair for me, please?" Harry asked.
"Why? If you don't mind me asking that is," I mumbled.
"Just try and make a strand or two go down. Surely you've noticed it's about as hopeless as my own," Harry said. "But with old age is sorta goes away and becomes thinner.." He muttered, looking slightly annoyed.
I bit back my smile and nodded at Harry. When I turned I noticed Albus' eyes were on mine. I gulped.
Okay, focus, Willow. Just one strand..or maybe five if you can. Yeah! Go for five! Show them your no squib! *giggle*
Brain! Get outta here!
I rolled my eyes at my own random thoughts and focused on Albus' hair. It really was messy. But in a adorable way. I squinted my eyes at a chunk that was standing up from him pulling on it in his frustration over me. I focused as hard as I could and thought, "Lay flat."
For a moment I thought I did it but it was just Albus stretching.
"Hey! No moving!" I snapped at him.
Albus froze and glanced over at me before glancing up at his dad who was trying not to laugh at his son's position he was in.
I pointed my finger at him and squinted at him before starring back at his hair. I heard a chuckle and then a cough coming from Harry and couldn't help but smile. Then it just happened. His hair laid flat. Albus stopped glaring at his dad and grinned back at me, while touching his hair.
"You did it!" he cried, jumping up.
Harry walked over to me too and patted me on the shoulder while Albus squezzed my other one. I grinned at both of them with tears in my eyes. I looked up at Albus' hair and continued to make it lie flat and then stick back up again.
I nodded and turned back to have fun with Albus' hair again. But he had backed away, grumpling something about girls. I squinted my eyes and tugged on a piece. He let out a small yelp and this time Harry laughed openly. He patted my shoulder again.
"I think me and you will be seeing alot of eachother, Willow."
I smiled back at him, hoping it was true. I liked Harry. And Albus. They were both really nice and funny.
Albus walked over to me and squinted at a loose curl on my shoulder. I felt it tug and then go back into a curl and instead of laughing with him I gasped. Albus immediatly stopped laughing and walked closer so he was right beside me.
"Willow? Are you okay? I-I'm sorry. I didn't mean to hurt you," he said, shocked that there were tears falling down my face.
I nodded and laughed, trying to calm his fears, but only starting crying harder.
I am such a mess.
I glanced up and noticed Albus looking at his dad with shock all over his face. I felt bad for making him feel bad, but I didn't think I could talk about her yet. I couldn't tell our secrets or the way she pushed my hair back when I cried.
I felt like if I spoke the words out loud, they'd float away and be lost.
"Willow?" Harry asked sitting down on the bed beside me and putting his hand back on my shoulder. I tensed but didn't move away. Harry squezzed my shoulder before letting go.
"I don't know if this will make you feel any better, but I found someone who wants you. Who wants to take care of you."
I sniffed a few times and wiped my eyes to look up at him.
"Wh-who?" I choked out.
"Your grandmother. I know you don't know her very well, but she's a wonderful women and can't wait to meet you."
I just stared at him.
"But..I don't have any grandparents. My mum's parents died when I was just a baby and he told me that his were dead to. They were both didn't have any siblings either, so I have no uncles, aunts, cousins, or anything. I think you found the wrong person," I insisted.
Harry smiled sadly at me. "Maybe dead to him, but not physically speaking. Your grandmother, Marie Bridges, is sitting in the waiting room outside your window and has been watching you for a while now."
I turned to look out the large glass window by the door and saw a middle-aged woman sitting in one of the many blue plush chairs. She straightened up when she noticed me notice her. She gave me a small smile and waved and I think I might have at least given her a confused face, but I managed to wave back. She was sitting down so I wasn't for sure how tall she was but she didn't look that tall. If I had to guess I'd say 5'3. She had short, wavy, brown, hair and kind brown eyes. I thanked God they weren't blue like his. She looked nice but there was a certain look about her that told me she could put her foot down if she needed too.
Gee, Grandma, what big eyes you have.
I sighed, giving my brain that one. She did have big eyes. But I bet if she stopped looking like a madhatter who lost her hat, they'd be a bit smaller. Besides, her eyes were nice. I knitted my eyebrows in confusion as I finished taking her in.
For some reason, she looked familiar..
I shook my head and turned back to Harry.
"If you know magic, couldn't you take my casts off?"
He made a small, "oh!", noise and pulled out his own stick.
"That's a wand. You'll get one sometime soon. You'll love it," Albus said, trying to make me smile again.
Harry grunted. "He knows this because he's 'borrowed' his brother's once."
Albus turned towards his dad. "It was a complete coincidence that it ended up under my pillow!"
"I'm sure it was, son," Harry said and I couldn't help but grin.
I turned back to Harry as he pointed his wand at my arm and leg. He gave me an apologic look as he put his wand back in his pocket.
"Sorry. We had to keep those things on you over night. I was suppost to come in here and take them off but..I forgot," he said smiling and even blushing slightly.
I laughed and moved my arm and leg. Magic is pretty sweet. I stood up and almost fell because I stood up too quick. But luckily Albus had reached forward and caught me. I quickly grabbed him back so I didn't fall. Phew.
"Thanks," I said and slowly took a step towards the door.
Baby steps, Willow.
Alright, this wasn't so bad. I can do this. All of a sudden I got so happy. I jumped a tiny jump that would've gone unnoticed but my wings were buzzing with excitement and when I bounced I flew up.
Harry and Albus rushed over to grab my legs. I couldn't help but laugh again. What is it with these guys?
Thinking I can't fly my own wings. Please! I can even make them sharp and soft when I want to. I don't know why but I just knew. I did it just to prove I could.
Yep. I felt the tips of both wings grow longer and harder. I knew if I felt them they'd be like daggers. I didn't like the rush of adreniline it gave me so I sank their fangs back in. They were soft and silky again as I landed.
"You guys..honestly," I said and then walked towards the door.
I didn't even have to look behind me to know they were sharing a look of disbelief. I grinned. Harry was right. Things would get better. Not now. And defiantly not tomorrow or the next few months. But they would get better.
I turned and waved for Albus and Harry to follow me out. They did and I smiled at both of them before walking out.
I walked right up to Marie. She quickly stood up and her eyes searched my face.
"You look just like your mother," she said softly.
I smiled and forced my eyes to stay dry.
"You knew her?"
She nodded. "Me and her spoke very often. Then one day I just lost all connection. Your father-"
"No," I interrupted. "He."
Marie paused for a moment before nodding and continuing.
"He told me I was dead to him. To not ever bother any of you again. You were only three years old when he took you and your mother away from here. He wouldn't tell me where and wouldn't tell me why he left so abruptly," she trailed off, tears now forming in her eyes. "Now I can take a guess.."
I nodded and couldn't stop my eyes from watering that time.
I quickly wiped them away and cleared my throat before talking again.
"What am I suppost to call you?" I asked, looking up at her. I was right. She was only a little shorter then Harry.
Her eyes were still watery as she bent down so we were eye to eye. "You can call me Marie if you want..but I would love to be called Grandma or even just Grams."
I smiled a watery smile at her. I'm pretty sure I fell in love with her right then. "Okay..Grams."
She grinned and then the next second we were both throwing our arms around eachother and crying. We cried for my mum and I'm pretty sure she cried for him too..but I think I did a little too.
But mostly we cried for eachother. We had both lost someone. She had lost her son and a lifetime of memories with her only grandchild she never got the chance to know and I had lost both parents and memories with a grandmother I never knew I had.
Albus and Harry stood a little aways from us and gave us space.
When we finally broke apart I was holding her hand. It was soft, just like my mum's. She griped mine back.
"I hope we meet again, Willow," Harry said with a smile.
I couldn't help it. I let go of Grams and ran at Harry. He was surprised by the hug but chuckled and gently hugged me back, careful of my wings.
"Thank you. For everything," I said with my cheek squished against his stomach.
I felt him laugh. "I would gladly do it all again."
I pulled back and smiled up at him. Then I turned and looked at Albus who was smirking at me. I squinted my eyes at him in a playful way with a smile still on my face.
"I understand. You can tug my hair all day and scare the crap outta me but you can't give me a hug? Makes perfect sense."
Harry raised his hand so it popped Albus' head lightly. "Language," he said but it was obvious he was playing.
I laughed and threw my arms around Albus. It was alot easier to hug him since I came to his nose. Hmm.. Was I short?
Of course you're short. If you're lucky you'll reach 5'1.
Gee, thanks, Brain.
Albus hugged me back and spun me in a circle so my feet came off the ground. I laughed and my wings gave a large flap. If I would've been paying attention I would've noticed the smug looks that my Grams and Harry exchanged. But as I was floating in the air, laughing down at Albus, I didn't. I floated back down into his arms and kissed his cheek.
He blushed and put me down.
"See ya soon?" He asked hopefully.
I nodded and gave him a smile.
"Great! We might even run into each other at Diagon Alley."
My raised eyebrow was enough of a question. He shook his head and said, "You'll see."
I rolled my eyes and smiled as I walked back to my smiling Grams. I reached for her soft hand.
"You're going to love your new room. I will buy you whatever you want to put in it," Grams said.
Then she was off rambling about how wonderful it would be and how much fun we'd have and how nice it would be to finally have some company. I know she was trying to cheer me up about leaving my other home but it was a bit too much.
But no way did I tell her that. I let her be happy and decided we could talk later. We were about to walk out the doors when I turned my head back and noticed Albus was still watching me. Harry was talking to my nurse.
Oh yeah, forgot about her. I'm sure Harry will let her know how much I appreciated her help..and those strawberries.
This wasn't so bad. Maybe..just maybe..I can do this.
There's the last flashback!
Hope you guys liked it!
