Thank you for reading and sticking with the story this far - please let me know what you think!! :D I want to dedicate this chapter to Lisa to say thank you for all the lovely reviews you've been writing! It always brightens my day :)
I grinned at him excitedly. “Exactly! Everyone who works or studies here at Hogwarts speaks English. As far as I know, there aren’t many people who can speak other languages; most people rely solely on English to communicate.”
“Whereas you can speak seven languages to some extent,” Peter said slowly.
“Seven?!” Severus exclaimed.
“Only two fluently,” I murmured absently. “Anyway. If we take away English and give every person in the castle a random language...no one will be able to communicate. Think of the chaos it will cause...!”
James laughed. “It’s the perfect crime! It’s pseudo-educational...it’s going to be hilarious...and you’re totally right, Rem; this isn’t directed at any one person so we can’t be punished!”
“So you guys really think this could be a good prank?” I asked, suddenly feeling a little shy of my idea.
Lily flashed a smile at me. “Absolutely. This is perfect, Remus!”
Wow. Approval from Lily...for a prank? I must be good.
“What would you say if not only could we switch everyone’s languages...but we could also work it so that nobody realises that they aren’t speaking English. I mean...everyone thinks that they are speaking normally...but they aren’t.”
They all looked at one another, smiles breaking out across their faces.
Sirius turned to me, smiling...proudly? “You can really do that?”
I nodded. “Sure. I mean...I think so. I haven’t tried it yet.”
“Can we try what you’ve got so far?” Severus asked me curiously. “So that we can all see how it works, I mean.”
I swallowed nervously. “Sure. I mean...this is the first time I’ve tested it properly...it might need a bit more tweaking to get it right,” I warned them, pulling out my wand. “And so far it’s only languages that I have a basic grasp of.”
“Which are?” James asked.
“Spanish, Swedish, German, French, Mermish and Runes,” Peter reeled off.
I flushed a little. “Don’t expect too much just yet.”
They all watched as I rolled up my sleeves. “Ok...here goes nothing,” I muttered, waving my wand in a motion similar to the ‘swish and flick’ of the levitation spell. “Lingua vicissitudo!”
“¿Ha sido exitado?” James burst out, then clapped a hand over his mouth. “¡Sí!”
[Has it worked? Yes!]
“Sie sprechen Spanisch!” Lily giggled. “Und ich spreche...Deutsch?” [You’re speaking Spanish! And I’m speaking...German?]
“It worked!” I exclaimed, unable to believe it. I turned to the others. “Peter...Sirius...Sev...what about you guys?”
“Je ne sais pas,” shrugged Sev nonchalantly. [I don’t know.]
James wolf-whistled. “Estás muy sexy cuando hablas francés, Sev!” [You’re very sexy when you speak French, Sev!]
Severus looked at him blankly. “¿Crees que Severus está sexy?” Peter winked. [You think that Severus is sexy?]
“Sirius?” I asked quietly.
He smiled at me shyly. “Jag älskar dig,” he murmured. [I love you.]
I blushed. “Lingua restituo,” I muttered, waving my wand at my friends again.
“Are we back - Remus, that was incredible!” Peter grinned.
“It worked!” Lily smiled at me.
I breathed a sigh of relief. “I need to work out how to do it on a larger scale,” I admitted. “But...it shouldn’t take too long. A couple of weeks or so.”
“Perfect,” Sirius smiled, looking me straight in the eyes. “Let’s do it.”
