The day for Quidditch finals dawned bright and gay. Dressing in a pink jumper and blue jeans, I looked about and grinned to myself. All my roommates were already out. I pulled the brush through my hair. They were straight and I was very thankful for not having to stand in front of the mirror and untangle my hairs like Naomi every morning. After I had tied them in a ponytail, I looked at the clock. There was still an hour left for the Quidditch match, plenty of time for breakfast and finding a nice seat. I sighed as I walked down to the common room. It was deserted except for a few first years. I mentally kicked myself for being late.
I reached the Great Hall and took a seat at an empty table. As I ate, I recalled the last week. I had hardly seen any of my friends as they had all been so busy in Quidditch. I hadn’t even told Naomi about the strange jealousy thing that had happened to me last week after dinner. I had come to the conclusion that it was just because he was spending time with Jenny Bones whom I completely despised. Satisfied with my thinking I turned my thoughts to the other things that were bothering me. First there was the whole exam thing. We had N.E.W.T next year. Then there was the job thing. It would be my last year at Hogwarts. I wanted to be a healer. But, I mentally chastised myself, first get through this summer. I turned my attention to the next problem and smiled a little, Fred and Naomi. The day after Fred had shown his concern for Naomi, Megan Parkinson had hexed her again the next day after lunch, leaving Naomi with bleeding lips and covered in slime. Fred had decided to make himself Naomi’s bodyguard and never let her roam alone. But the hexes had been stopped after Albus had come to know what was happening. He had given his teammates a piece of mind. But that did not stop Freddy from being with Naomi. A hand appeared at my right and nicked a muffin out of my plate.
“Hey!” I turned to find a grinning Scorpius Malfoy shoving the muffin in his mouth. I smiled at him as he leaned down and pulled me in a hug. Scorpius and I went a long way back. We became friends when I stood up for a little first year who was terrified because he carried the Malfoy name and was bullied by the James and Freddy the moment he entered. I had walked just in time to block the spells from James’ and Fred’s wand.
“I haven’t seen you for a long time. I was hoping to catch you this morning. I wanted to talk to you about my O.W.L’s actually.” Scorpius said and proceeded to pick another muffin.
“We will talk about that later. Don't you have a Quidditch match now?” I asked him. He was wearing his green Slytherin robes and was carrying his broom. He was his team’s seeker.
“Ok. Come, I’ll walk with you.” Scorpius said and picked up two more muffins.
“Pig.” I commented and laughed at his incredulous expression.
“What? I’m a growing boy. I need my proteins.”
We walked in silence towards the Quidditch pitch. I was starting to see people now, some rushing and some walking at a slow pace.
“What were you doing all alone?” Scorpius asked me after a minute of comfortable silence.
“Everyone already left for the match. I got up late.” We were at the pitch right now.
“Bye, best of luck.” I called out to him and turned to find myself bumping into something solid and warm.
“Ouch!” the word came out as a cry due to the impact of the collision. Hands shot out to steady me and I looked up to see and an amused James looking at me.
“Up so early, sleepy head?” James asked me sarcastically. He hated my habit of getting up late.
“Yups! Amazing day, isn’t it?” I asked him brightly. Just then the whistle sounded and we both looked up together at the sky.
“I guess it’s my cue.” He gave me a tight smile and a one armed hug. I had seen the worry in his eyes.
“You will be great.” I muttered in his robes before pulling out.
“Hey Brown. Here, we saved you a seat.” Dean Shannon patted the seat beside him. I plopped down in it, between Dean and Roxanne.
“Hey Roxy!” I greeted her brightly. Roxy was my roommate along with Naomi and Dom. She was Freddy’s twin and Dom’s cousin. She was her just like her twin in nature and had the famous Weasley temper when provoked. Both she and her brother had inherited their father’s red hair. Everyone always wondered why Roxy never got into Quidditch being George and Angelina Weasley’s daughter but she hated it.
“Finally. I was starting to think you were never coming down.” She teased me with a mischievous look in her eyes. Apart from the hairs, they had also inherited a knack for jokes and pranks from their father.
I stuck out my tongue at her and realised the match had already started. I whipped my head and got to my feet with the other students as the teams flew up in the air. William Jordan’s voice boomed around the pitch.
“And the game begins. We have Fred Weasley II holding the quaffle. He passes it to Luke Wood. And Wood shoots it at the goal. Megan Parkinson tries to block it but misses. Gryffindor scores, 10-0 Gryffindor.
Everyone shot to their feet and the ground was filled with screams and whoops of joy. I was among them as I and cheered at the top of my voice along with Roxanne and Dean. We did not sit down as the game continued.
“And the Gryffindor seeker, Rose Weasley, she turned me down last week by the way, seems to be scanning the field intently. The bludger is hit by Dominique Weasley, another beautiful Weasley, towards Lou and he hits it towards Albus. He dodges it just in time. Cousin’s war! James has the quaffle and he throws it towards Fred who shoots it at the goal. But the Oh-So-Hot Megan Parkinson is on her guard and blocks it successfully.”
“Mr. Jordan, please don’t stray from Quidditch otherwise I’ll be forced to take that mike away.” Mrs McGonagall shouted at him.
“Sorry Headmistress. Now back to the game, the quaffle is with James again. He passes it to Fred but Sweet Merlin, Albus dives and takes the quaffle mid-air. He throws it towards Ellie Zabani, who passes it back and Poof, through Naomi. Slytherin scores, 50-50!”
My breath hitched in my throat as Will announced the score. It was a tough call. Suddenly something caught my eye and I turned my head to see Scorpius and Rose chasing a golden coloured ball, the snitch. Everyone turned to that direction as Will continued with the commentary. The atmosphere tensed as Scorpius reached for the snitch and closed his fingers around it....
“And Slytherin wins! It was a neck to neck competition. My sourest congratulation to the Slytherin team.”
“But how? Why?” Roxanne spluttered. Dean looked equally dumb-struck. And I couldn’t believe my eyes. We had lost. My head spun as I took in the gloomy faces of my friends. They collected their runner-up trophy and walked out and into the changing room.
“Come on.” I tugged at a thunder-struck Roxanne and pulled her towards our common room. People rushed by us and elbows banged against each other. The Slytherins smiled and cheered as they hoisted Albus and Scorpius on their shoulders. Al caught my eyes and eyes. I gave him thumbs up and kept walking to my common room pulling Roxy behind me. My spirits plummeted down as I thought about my friends and the condolence they would need. I knew James anger would be out of hand. I just hoped that they would have enough brains in them to concentrate in their studies. We were standing in front of the Fat Lady now. I never noticed we had walked so far.
“Password please.” Her voice sounded sad and subdued for once, unlike her usual shrilly voice.
“Breadtarts.” I whispered quietly and took a deep breath as the picture swung open.
