“Yeah. Please, Remus...”
The rest of the weekend passed slowly - or maybe it was just that I was moving so slowly that menial things like going to the bathroom were so much slower. Monday came and my ankle was still healing, so I had to get up earlier than usual to get down to breakfast before the rush.
Sirius had intended to join me but he was still snoring by the time I left so I headed down alone. As I made my way down the corridor, I rounded the corridor and saw, “Severus!” I hissed.
He swung round, reaching for his wand, then grinned when he saw me.
“Remus. How are you doing?” he asked, hurrying to join me.
I smiled. “Yeah, not bad thanks.”
“What did you do to your leg?” he asked, gesturing to my ankle.
I grimaced. “Sprained my ankle. I was over-anxious to leave the Hospital Wing so Madame Pomfrey put me in charge of my own medication...but I have to use these until it works.”
He pulled a face. “Anyway, more importantly, how are you?” I asked.
He shrugged. “I’ve been better. Been worse too. I miss you all.”
“We miss you too,” I admitted sadly. “I wish Dumbledore could just rehouse you and be done with it. Or that we could just be friends openly. Or...anything other than this.”
He put a hand on my shoulder. “So do I, Rem. But...this is the way it has to be.”
“Then at least let’s see one another soon.”
He smiled. “Yeah. I’d like that.”
“Owl us,” I smiled sadly as we reached the Entrance Hall.
He nodded, clasped my shoulder for a moment and then marched away towards the Great Hall. I hobbled in a couple of minutes later and sat down just as Sirius hurried in. “Remus! You should have woken me!” he chastised.
I smiled and took his hand under the table. He stroked my palm and played with my fingers. “I just saw Sev,” I murmured in his ear, afraid of being overheard.
He turned to stare at me, then glanced across to the Slytherin table. Sev nodded almost imperceptibly. Sirius returned the gesture, squeezing my hand. “How’s he doing?” he asked.
I shrugged. “He says he’s been better but he’s also been worse. He also said that he misses us all a lot. I said we should meet. Maybe we could have dinner or something one night in the Room of Requirement. He’s going to owl us.”
He nodded as though that was what he was expecting. “Yeah, it’d be nice to see him soon. I’m glad he’s getting on ok...that things aren’t - aren’t too bad.”
“I’m really worried about him, Si,” I murmured. “I think he’s a lot more fed up than he’s letting on and I just wish there was some way to help him. I feel so helpless.”
He nodded. “We can help him by being there for him as much we can, Rem. He needs us. He needs his friends.”
