"...But...it’s just you...”
Early the next morning, I was gently shaken awake by Sirius.
“Wassgoinon?” I mumbled.
“Shh,” he whispered in my ear. “Come on, Rem. Put on some clothes and meet me in the common room.”
He gestured to a tshirt, tracksuit trousers and woollen jumper folded neatly on the chair next to my bed, then left the room. What was he doing?! A little disorientated, I pulled the clothes on and went to join him in the common room. He grinned at me as I came down the stairs.
“Nice hair, Lupin,” he winked.
I caught sight of my reflection in one of the frosty windows. I looked terrible; scrawny and pale with black rings under my eyes, huddled inside clothes that were a little too big for me, bed hair all over the place. I pulled a hand through my hair in a half-attempt to tame it.
“How can you still want me when I look like this?” I mumbled. “I look half-dead.”
“You’re beautiful,” he murmured. “Doesn’t matter how tired you look.”
I stared at him, my cheeks flushing. He blushed too. Then he smiled and took my hand. “C’mon. I’ve got something for you.”
We hurried through the corridors of Hogwarts, ducked under the invisibility cloak, me following Sirius’ lead. I was so tired that it wasn’t until we reached the astronomy tower that I realised where he was taking me.
“Up on the roof?” I asked, looking at him as though he was mad.
He laughed, producing his broomstick from a corner and climbing on. He pulled me on behind him. I held on tight, breathing in the scent of his neck.
“Ready?” he asked me quietly, the word sending a shiver of excitement up my spine.
I nodded. “Yeah.”
He turned round to grin brilliantly at me, squeezed my hand and then we were flying, up and out into the cold air.
As we huddled together on the platform, Sirius pulled a thick blanket around us and produced a bottle with a small blue fire in it. I stared up at the stars until I managed to locate Sirius. I pointed up to it and he snaked his arm around me, squeezing me a hug. We sat for a while, gazing up at the stars. Then he kissed my cheek. “I promised,” he murmured, pointing to the horizon where the first hint of sun was beginning to peek over the lake.
I turned to him in wonder. “You remembered.”
He laughed quietly and kissed me properly. “Yes, I remembered.”
We sat in silence, watching the sun inch its way up into the sky. The sky turned for an inky blue to a brilliant orangey red and finally streaks of pink and pale blue intertwined. Finally he turned to me and trailed his cold fingers down my cheek.
“I promised I’d date you Rem.”
I smiled. He looked at me seriously then. “Remus...don’t be afraid about tonight. Try to keep this in mind. Right here, right now. If you feel like you’re losing us again...remember this. And I’ll be there with you. I’m coming with you tonight and you can’t stop me.”
