A/N: You've Got The Love (Acoustic)- Florence + The Machine: Chapter Song.
Enjoy the last chapter my loves! See you at the end :)
Hermione sat on her bed, trying as hard as she could to stop her tears. The situation with Ron was one thing, but Draco leaving her? She couldn’t bear the thought that she had hurt him. The only reason she had denied him in front of Ron was to get him to leave, but looking back she knew that had been stupid; so why had she said it? Was she afraid of the truth? Did she actually feel something for Draco Malfoy?
She shook her head and wiped her face, but the tears kept coming. A minute later, a soft knock came on the door.
“Hermione?” It was Ginny. “Ron told me you had another fight…. Oh my God what happened?” She was at Hermione’s side in an instant, taking her hands.
“He… called me….a slut. He said that… Harry would hate me…. And Draco left me.” She spoke between ragged sobs. Ginny’s eyes hardened.
“Draco? When did you start calling him that?”
“Does it matter? He left, because I said some stupid things.”
“Why does that matter? What’s going on Hermione?” Ginny’s voice had lost all of it’s comfort.
Hermione took a few deep breaths; She’d already lied once today. Her eyes met Ginny’s as she said. “He’s so different than we thought, I had him all wrong----”
“You had him wrong last year, when he exposed us all to Umbridge? All the countless times he’s tormented you, Ron, Harry…. We had him wrong, all those times?” She looked at her in disbelief, as if Hermione was a different person.
“Yes. We did.” Hermione held her ground. “In fact, I’m going to go find him now.” She stood up, ready to leave, when Ginny grabbed her wrist.
“Why him Hermione? He’s done so much wrong; How can you forgive him so quickly?” Ginny said somberly, pleading in her eyes. “We only have one day until we get back above ground; you need to get your priorities right.”
Hermione took a deep breath. “We’ve all been wrong before.”
With that, she turned on her heel, and departed. Leaving Ginny with nothing but questions
She walked into the library trembling. Hermione was still twisted and confused about what exactly she was going to say, but she knew she had to say something. She wouldn’t let it end like this.
He was sitting in the red armchair, head in his hands. He sat absolutely still, and she knew he was really angry. She swallowed her nerves, and went right in.
He looked up quickly, them formed a snarl when he saw it was her.
“Haven’t you done enough for today Gryffindor?”
She inhaled. He wouldn’t even use her name now. “I’ve come to apologize.”
“Go ahead; It means nothing.”
His words stung, but she pressed on. “I denied us in front of Ron because I was scared. As much as we’ve shared, we haven’t known each other for very long.”
Draco gave a loud snort, and Hermione felt herself go red.
“And we can’t do this. We can’t.”
“Why?” Draco said, looking into her eyes; mocking. “Because you’re afraid? Of what you feel? Because you’re not sure? Well damn Granger, cry me a river!”
“Don’t you dare mock me Draco! I have a right to feel any way I want! Just because you’re so sure doesn’t mean I have to be! I can’t think of only myself!”
“Well of course you can’t! Because you Gryffindors are so damn loyal! You never worry about number one; yourselves! Take a leaf from the Slytherin book and think about what you want.”
“It’s not that easy! Do you know what people would say---”
“WHO THE HELL CARES ABOUT THEM? They are not us. They have no idea what we feel, therefore, they cannot control us and they shouldn’t even bother too! You’re being a coward.”
“Yes Granger, coward. You won’t admit to how you feel about me because you are unnecessarily scared.”
“I think I have a right to be afraid Malfoy.”
“No! No you don’t!” He stood up now, gripping her by the arms, speaking gentler now. “You have feelings for me. Don’t try to deny it, I know it’s true; and when you care about someone like this, everything else is up to fate. Screw fear, take chances.”
“It’s not that easy!”
“Yes it is!” He was shaking her now. “I care about you, more than I’ve cared since…. More than I’ve cared for someone in a long time. Despite everything in the past, I know you do too. You shouldn’t be afraid, because I will always be there.”
Hermione looked away from him then. “You can’t promise me that.”
“No! You know the last person who said that to me? Ron? He broke my heart! He and I will never be the same again, and for some strange reason…. If that happened between us I… I don’t know what I would do.” Hermione heard the tears before they came. “I can’t accept that from you.”
“You can.” He said, a careful whisper. “This whole time, you’ve been trying to break my walls down, without knowing that you had some of your own. It’s my turn now.” He took a deep breath, and intertwined her fingers with his. “Tell me what you really think. Not any of that surface-y crap; every raw thing you feel.”
Hermione looked down at their hands. He was so warm, and she knew he was right. “Anger at Ron, fear of what could happen to us…. Shame because of Ginny and Harry; Confusion at you…” She looked up at him. “You’re so good at confusing me.”
His eyes were intense on her. “What else?”
Hermione was choked with tears now. “I care about you; So much Draco. So much. I, I’m willing to try this; I can.”
Draco cracked a small, small smirk, and put a pair of their hands on his heart. “I promise you, that I will do everything to make this work. I will not hurt you Hermione Granger.”
“And I promise I won’t be scared.”
She heard him laugh. “That’s all I wanted to hear.”
A moment later, his lips were on hers and Hermione surrendered to him completely. His lips were warm, and they moved with hers like a strange, new dance they were creating together. She saw sparks erupt behind her eyes, breaking down all her barriers, as he increased the pressure. In that one kiss, all the pent up emotion that they’d both felt came flooding out. She could’ve have spent eternity kissing him, but he pulled away.
“So, we’re doing this?” He said with a huge smile gracing his face.
Hermione kissed him briefly, wiping the now forgotten tears from her eyes.
“Yes, we are.”
Draco and Hermione had stayed in the library the rest of the night, curled up on the armchair. They slept for a few hours, and as usual, Draco looked over at Granger, who was still sleeping.
He kissed his girlfriend’s head where it lay against his chest. “Hungry?”
She stirred slowly awake, yawning. “A little bit. Not much though.” She said, groggily.
“I kind of want a sandwich.”
“As happy as I am to hear you say that, in order to get a sandwich you would have to move; so you get to stay here.”
Draco laughed. “Fine by me.” He felt Granger nestle deeper into him. He was so happy. So drunk off the moments they shared together. Finally, he had reason again.
“What time is it?” She asked him.
She laughed, musically. “We should be getting back to the room. We need to pack up.”
Draco nodded and rose. “I can’t believe after three weeks of being down here, we’re actually going back.” He held his hand out for her.
“I know. Are you worried?”
“Worried? No. Disappointed? Yes. You’re a better roommate than any Slytherin.”
“Thanks.” She said with a smile. They walked out of the library then, and back to their room.
“Do you think the sleeping kids have gotten the potion yet?” Draco asked a few minutes later.”
Hermione shrugged. “Possibly. You want to go check?”
Draco couldn’t help the small pang of jealously he felt, because he knew exactly why she wanted to go check.
They changed their course, and ended up in the infirmary a few minutes later. At the front doors, Hermione hesitated.
“What’s wrong?” Draco asked.
He saw her shake her head and swallow. “Nothing, I’m just being silly. Let’s go then.”
He shrugged, opening the door for her to go inside.
Hermione took a few steps through the door with Draco close behind. There were a few students in hospital gowns roaming around, tripping over things. She frantically looked in the crowd for Harry, when she spotted him next to Madame Pomfrey’s desk.
“Harry!” She yelled at him.
His head whipped towards her, and even in the distance she could see his achingly familiar smile. He beckoned her over. Hermione looked to Draco, who nodded and went to look at something else. She took that as a yes and ran right into Harry’s open arms.
He smelled the same, he felt the same, same old Harry; and he was back to her now. They swayed together happily, and she could hear him chuckling softly in her ear.
“Hermione.” He said when she pulled away. His face held his trademark sloppy grin.
“Harry, you have no idea how much I’ve missed you.” She said, tears of happiness brimming her eyes.
“I do.” He said beaming at her and stroking her cheek with his thumb. “I heard you talking to me that one time you came in.”
“Yeah.” He brushed a curl from her face. “And I missed you that much too.”
Hermione smiled, wiping a stray tear from her eye.
“So, you and Malfoy. You’re friends now? Roommates?” His eyes lost a little bit of their sparkle.
Hermione inhaled. “Yes, in fact we are---”
“Very good friends.” Draco said, coming up behind Hermione. She looked at him for a moment, and his eyes said to follow his lead.
Harry stared at him; hard. “Malfoy.”
Hermione had to look up between the two of them, as they both had a good foot on her height. Their eyes were locked in combat, and she couldn’t tell which one of them was going to break first.
“’Mione, we’ll talk later.” He kissed her on the cheek and left, staring at Draco one last time as he did. Hermione moved in front of Draco, who looked poised to kill.
“What was that all about?” She asked him.
“He used Occlemency on me.” He said, his voice laced with quiet anger.
Hermione blanched. “Did he see anything?”
“No, but he did give me a message.”
“What did he say?”
Walking next to Harry, Hermione took her first steps on grass in three weeks. She inhaled, smelling the scent of crisp fall air and sunshine. The exit was positioned just a little ways away from the lake, and she could see the sunlight fall over it, making lovely little flecks upon it’s surface.
Many of the students had ditched their trunks on the ground, now frolicking in the joy of being above ground again. Harry looked over to her, wondering if she wanted to do the same but she shook her head and took his hand in hers, giving it a squeeze.
Harry was beckoned over by Ginny and he left Hermione a minute later. She sighed, sitting down on the slightly damp grass and watching as student after student came into the light. She saw Ron exit, Lavender in tow. He spared one glance her way, but she pretended not to notice it. After a few minutes more, the flow of students became less and less. Hermione sat up slightly, wondering where he could be hiding. Finally, he emerged. Dressed in freshly pressed school robes and lugging a heavy trunk. He met her eyes and gestured to a nearby tree, out of sight. She followed suit, leaving her luggage behind. He had perched himself on one of the higher branches with a raised eyebrow.
‘Can you do it?’ His eyes said. She smirked and began to climb, not caring about her skirt or blouse at this point, and once she reached him he locked his lips with hers. Hermione relished his kiss now, because she knew she would be without them for a while. When they broke apart, she stared into his slightly shadowed eyes, just smiling.
“Are you ready for this Granger?” He said.
She nodded and he tugged one of the curls away from her face.
“I’m ready Draco; I’m ready.”
He smiled, kissed her cheek, and gathered her in his warm arms as they watched the other students, frolicking below them; so far away from where they were now.
