“How is he doing?” The healer entered the room the next morning.

I glanced to Louis who was still in a deep slumber from all the medication they had given him to ease the pain. “I got here an hour ago and he was sleeping. He seems to be fine.”

“Good. I’m just going to check his temperature and the incision.” He informed me as he was walking over.

I nodded, “Okay, I’ll be right back then.”

I left so the healer could check over Louis and so I could go grab a quick cup of tea from the café. Hastily, I walked back to the room and the healer was finished. He smiled, “Everything looks good so far. There are healers everywhere so grab one of us if you need something.”

I thanked him and sat back down on my chair. My fingers gripped my warm cup of tea and I drank down the hot liquid, appeasing my thirst. I sighed, leaning back in my chair after setting the cup down on the table. Louis stirred slightly from his slumber and I jumped, feeling his fingers touch my wrist. My eyes averted over to him, seeing his eyes gazing back at me. My lips turned upward into a smile. “Hey, how are you feeling?”

Louis sighed, not saying anything. He winced a little causing me to cringe. I didn’t like seeing people in pain, especially him. I asked concernedly, “Do you need me to get the healer?”

He shook his head and I questioned, “Are you sure?”

He managed to grin to at me, his eyes lighting up at something he was finding humorous that I didn’t know. I frowned and he softly spoke, his voice still hoarse, “You fuss over me too much.”

I smiled and his fingers slid down my wrist, caressing my skin. His subtle touches made my heart melt as his fingers grazed the back of my hand. Finally, he stopped once he reached my fingers. Slowly, he took my fingers in his then brought my hand to his chapped lips. The gentle pressure of his lips to my fingers started to make my heart skip a beat. He placed my hand near his heart, my palm feeling the warmth of his skin and the rhythmic beating beneath. His warm hand loosely covered mine, his thumb rubbing my smooth skin in a circular motion.

In that moment, I understood perfectly. He didn’t need to say one word to me because when I looked at his mesmerizing blue eyes I began to see everything he felt. He wanted me to stay with him. The after effects of the surgery were causing him some pain but when I glanced back down at my hand resting under his on his heart, I knew the pain wasn’t what he thinking of. If anything was on his mind, I was. His heart was beating because of me. Life meant nothing to him if I weren’t there. He felt the same as I, life meant nothing to him if I weren’t there…

Someone shook me awake and I looked up through sleepy eyes to see Healer Russo standing before me. I rubbed my eyes and asked softly, “What time is it?”

“Well, it’s past five. You must have dozed off in the past hour. I came by a couple hours ago and you were still awake then.” He chuckled.

I stretched my arms and my neck before looking over at Louis who was now sitting up in the bed. Healer Russo mentioned, “So far, Louis is doing rather well and I think he should be fine to go home in a couple hours.”

I nodded, “Good.”

Healer Russo looked at Louis, “I’ve prescribed a couple potions you should be taking daily for the next couple weeks and I have talked to the healers over at St. Mungo’s. All your check ups will be there so you don’t have to travel far all the time.”

Louis replied quietly, “Thanks.”

Healer Russo handed me a paper. “The list of precautions he should be taking is there. No lifting heavy objects or over stressing should occur.”

I smiled, eager for Louis to go home, “I will make sure he doesn’t do anything he’s not supposed to.”

“Good, I trust you’ll take good care of him. I’ll be back with some release forms for you to go over. Feel free to owl his family at any time.”
Healer Russo smiled back before leaving the room.

I yawned and Louis asked concerned, “Have you been sleeping at all the past couple days?”

Honestly, I had not slept well the past couple nights. I’d been too focused on everyone else to even think of myself. I bit my lip, hesitating in replying. “Well I have had a lot going on but I do find time-”

“Honestly, Stephanie.” Louis looked at me, concern crossing his face.

I groaned, giving up on trying not to worry him, “Fine, I haven’t been sleeping all that great the past couple of nights. There has been a lot on my mind with your surgery, my mother-”

He took my hand in his, rubbing my skin in a soothing motion, “I told you before, you don’t need to worry about me. I am fine.”

My eyes met his gaze, not seeing a hint of grief or pain. Louis said he would be fine, but I was still uncertain; my mother used to say the exact same words to me when I was younger when she had her boyfriend over. She was never fine. I hated how everyone tried to mask away their troubles or their pain from me, to keep me from worrying. Louis squeezed my hand, “Stephanie, I’m fine, I assure you.”

“You would tell me if you weren’t?” I questioned quietly.

He nodded, “I would tell you.”

A couple hours later, Louis was able to floo back home. We would not be going to his apartment, as he needed constant care the first couple days so we would stay at his parents’ home. Healer Russo had given me the potions prescribed to Louis and I carried them in my bag. I held Louis’ hand as we slowly walked to the fireplace in the hospital. His fingers rubbed my skin reassuringly but my stomach was still twisting with nerves and my teeth bit down on my lip till I could taste a hint of blood.

Normally, I would cling to Louis for support whenever we flooed or apparated somewhere. However this time he clung to me. His arms held onto me for support, clinging to me as if he were a child needing someone to hold onto. My hand rubbed his arm reassuringly but there was nothing more I could do to make the trip any easier for him. He was still a bit weak from surgery but he wanted to go home, that much I knew. We had argued for a good amount of time earlier if he was feeling able to leave today. He had won the argument.

I held him, my arms around his as we flooed to his parents’ house. Once we were in their fireplace, Louis started to cough from the trip and I rubbed his shoulders, trying to ease his pain. We stepped out into the living room only to be hugged and kissed by his awaiting mother. His father was away at work for the evening but she was here to greet us. Louis coughed, his breathing becoming uneven for a moment, causing me to look at him with worry. He sensed my gaze on him and looked at me, trying to reassure me he was fine.

His mother hastily ordered him about, “Sit down before you make yourself worse, Louis! Stephanie and the healers owled me all I needed to know about your recovery.”

Louis managed a small smile and sat down on the couch. He wasn’t coughing anymore from the flooing so I hoped he was fine. I unpacked his prescribed potions and handed him one. “Drink a mouthful of that.”

He swallowed a small mouthful, nearly spitting it out at the horrid taste, “That tastes disgusting!”

“You’ll drink every bit of it since it will help you get better!” His mother sternly said to him.

He mumbled something French under his breath that I didn’t catch but his mother did. She looked at him strictly and he smiled at her, muttering an apology. She shook her head and said, “It is getting late and you need plenty of rest. Stephanie, if you wish, you can sleep in Victoire’s old room. I’ve redone it into a guestroom of sorts.”

I smiled at her, “Thank you.”

She nodded, “It was the least I could do. You may stay with us as long as you like.”

“Well, I really should be getting home tomorrow. My mother is staying with the Potters and I don’t want her to wear out her welcome there. I need to get her settled in at my place in the Leaky Cauldron tomorrow if that’s alright.” I stated quickly.

Fleur hugged me as a mother would hug her child, “That is fine, I understand. I will be able to manage keeping Louis from over doing himself.”

I nodded and we got ready for bed. I entered Louis’ bedroom, finding him already lying in bed, staring up at the ceiling. I walked over to him and sat on the edge of the bed, “I will be back tomorrow afternoon. I won’t be gone for very long, it’s just to settle my mother in and get her introduced to Hannah.”

“I will be alright.” He looked at me, his fingers running along my arm.

My fingers played with the edge of his blanket as I spoke, “I know you will.”

Louis slowly sat up and touched my cheek, turning my face to look at him. “Je t'aime, Stephanie.”

I smiled at him, butterflies forming in my stomach, “Love you too. You’re going to have to teach me how to say that.”

He grinned at me, shaking his head, “Maybe I will have to but then you would want to know everything I am saying.”

I laughed a little, “I suppose I would.”

He kissed me lightly before lying back down on the pillows. My fingers traced his jaw line, running along the rough skin from where he had not shaved in the past couple days. I leaned down and kissed him, my lips savoring his until I finally pulled away, “Sleep well.”

Louis nodded, his eyes half closed. I stood and walked to the door, shutting the lights off and he softly said, “Je dormirai bien sachant je rêverai de toi.”(I will sleep well knowing I will dream of you.)

I did not know what he had said but I knew it must’ve been something sweet. “I hope you can tell me what that means.”

“We’ll see. There are some things that don’t need explanation, they only need to be felt.” Louis added.

I shook my head, smiling to myself in the darkness. I crawled into my own bed and once my head hit the pillow, I closed my eyes and I saw him. I always saw his sky blue eyes staring back at me when I went to sleep and I always could feel the tender touch of his fingers on mine. He didn’t need to physically be there for me all the time because he was always there in my heart.
