Chapter 2: Infected with Sadness
A/N: Disclaimer: the usual JK Rowling is amazing and the enchanting world of Harry Potter is all hers.
“But I’m sorry!”
“Not gonna happen.”
“Come on will you stop and listen to me for a second!?” cried a distressed James Potter.
“For the last time James! I’ve been listening to you this entire time! I know you’re sorry about what you said last night and I’m not interested in an apology!” We were walking to the Great Hall for lunch after our Transfiguration class. James hadn’t left me alone all day! And on a usual day I wouldn’t have minded but now…I was just plain annoyed. Didn’t he know that sorry doesn’t work for me!? My dad had said sorry countless times after he…after what he did and it never helped anything! God boys are so stupid!
We were starting to get a lot of stares and a group of girls passed me glaring a glare that said don’t-yell-at-him-he’s-hot.
I shot back a back-the-fuck-away-before-you-die look and they all scurried into the Hall without another glance in my direction.
“But I’m sorry! What else do you want from me September?”
I placed my fingers on my temple and administered a soothing massage to my aching forehead, “You know what James?”
He looked at me eagerly.
“Prove it.” I snapped and strutted my way into the Great Hall without another backwards glance. I sat next to Rose beginning to pile food on my plate.
He was rushing up to me taking the seat beside me, “How Ember?”
I looked at him and plastered a bright fake smile that made him recoil his eyes widened in fear, “If I had to tell you then it obviously doesn’t mean enough to you to muster enough creativity to apologize CORRECTLY now does it?” I stood suddenly, appetite lost, and marched out of the Great Hall.
I pounded my head on the table.
“What did you do James?” asked Rose, not even bothering to grace me with her look.
I grumbled in response.
“Oh how intriguing!” she cried in mock shrillness, “What else you got?”
I looked up at her and saw her eyes narrowed and her lips pursed in a very Weasley-like way.
I involuntarily scooted back, “Sorry.” I mumbled.
She shrugged and turned back to her sandwich waiting for a good response.
I sighed in defeat; “I called her out on her sleeping habits.”
Rose spit out her food…poor Freddy was now covered in turkey. Scorp held back a laugh as Erik shamelessly busted up.
“YOU WHAT!?” several faces whirled around to see the commotion. Everyone at Hogwarts knew that if Rose Weasley was pissed there’d be a damn good 'food and a show' moment.
“Why the bloody hell would you do that!?” she continued to scream.
A few of the teachers, particularly Minnie, glared down at us for disturbing her lunch. I smiled weakly up at her and she rolled her eyes and continued eating her sandwich, which was still in full eatable form…unlike the remnants of Rose’s which were spread unforgivingly all over Fred’s face…
“I didn’t mean too!” I yelled back at her. Well it’s true! I was just curious and my curiosity around September never comes out right. I usually ended up insulting her and I didn’t mean too! I just wanted to know who she is.
“You’re a prat James!” spat Rose who got up and ran after September.
“URG.” I groaned pounding my head on the table in grief. “Why? Why? Why?”
“I told you so.” Came an obnoxious voice from behind me.
Al stood arrogantly looking down at me. His face turned down in a scowl and his eyes burning with anger, and was it possible hurt?
My face turned into a scowl, my eyes searching his. But as soon as that speck of weakness appeared it was gone just as quickly.
Al stalked off to join his friends farther down the table. I glared at him and Freddy looked over at me. His face raw and red from scrubbing food off of his face.
“Don’t be upset at him.” Said Fred wisely.
I looked away from my younger brother defeated, “He’s right…I should just give up.”
“Mate.” Said Scorp shaking his head, “Al’s just jealous.”
I looked down at my plate, hunger gone. I pushed it away from me and looked out towards the grounds.
“James, if September likes anyone it’s you.” It was Erik who spoke this time. I glanced up at him, if anyone knew anything about September it was Erik. They had been friends since they were in diapers…or so I’ve been told. Erik knew just about everything about September. And September knew almost everything about Erik.
For the first couple months of knowing September, Erik was always the enemy. They just seemed so close…TOO close. But I approached Erik calmly but assertively…ok fine I drew my wand and told him to back off… but all in all Erik had said there was nothing going on. He said they had tried the ”best friend kiss” and it wasn’t up to par. So they dropped it and continued. ‘Not worth messing with their friendship.’
Erik’s eyes were sincere. “You think so?” I asked trying my hardest to not sound vulnerable.
“Yeah I really do…Just something about the way she looks at you…”
In that minute of contemplative thinking a harassed looking Rose bounded up to us. Scorpius assuming a boy had done this held his wand up furiously, “Who did this to you!?” he shouted earning him looks from around the hall.
She looked at him blankly then, choosing to ignore him, looked directly at me, “I can’t find September.” Her voice was quiet, afraid.
In that instant I shot up out of my seat walking determined toward the doors of the Great Hall, “Where did you look?” I demanded sparing Rose a glance.
She looked so frightened, “Everywhere! The Room of Requirement, the grounds, the common room, the dorm room, all the girl’s bathrooms. I can’t find her anywhere.”
Then my worst fears were confirmed. August ran up too us his sisters in tow, “Where is she?” his voice directed to Rose.
August had this sixth sense about his sister. He just knew when something was wrong.
“I can’t find her!” she cried, tears were beginning to stream down her face and I knew that time was precious.
“Accio firebolt!” I shouted as soon as we were out on the grounds. It was snowing, lightly now but by the looks of the sky it was going to get heavier in a matter of minutes. The broom immediately flew through the air and into my extended hand.
My captain skills brimming over, I began to bark directions, “Weasley look in the dungeons, Delfire by the forest, June and July split one to the astronomy tower the other on the floors. Someone tell Fred to check the hideouts. He’ll know what I mean.”
They all nodded and rushed off in different directions. I shot into the sky and scouted the air.
Where was she? I journeyed quickly to the Quidditch pitch glancing around the stadium. I was about to try elsewhere when I saw her. She was lying on the ground nearly covered in snow. I dived down to her pulling out at the last second, incredible Wronski Feint if I do say so myself. Hindered only by a moment of pride I rushed over to her. Her eyes were closed her face was blue with cold. I picked her up immediately flying frantically for the hospital wing.
“No flying in the castle Mr. Potter!” shouted Minnie in a tissy.
“Sorry Professor emergency!” I continued to fly with September on my back. Swerving in and out of students ducking under landings finally reaching the doors. I jumped off of my broom and rushed in.
“Madame Pomfrey!” I called setting the ice-cold figure of September on the closest bed.
She came bustling out to see a blue September. She shrieked and ran back into her office and came out holding a steaming potion.
I held my breath as fear gripped my heart. I saw color coming back to her face and both Poppy and I relaxed visibly.
“Where is she? Minnie said she saw you flyi-“
Rose ran in first quickly followed by September’s family. Her previous thoughts dissolved as she lay eyes on her best friend, “Ember!” she cried rushing toward the bed. Her hair splayed everywhere. August’s face was red with cold, but relieved at seeing the color rush back into her face.
“I owe you one mate.” He said clasping my hand.
“Don’t mention it.” I shrugged letting the family settle around Ember’s bed. Fred, Scorp and Erik bounded up to me breaths of relief releasing as they saw September’s eyes open.
“Come on mates.” I said wrapping my arms around Fred my broom held loosely in the other, “Time to be off.”
They all nodded in silent agreement. “James?”
I turned to face September who was sitting up in her bed, a rosy glow emitting from her cheeks, her lips red with heat. She was staring at me disbelieving.
I looked over to her and smirked, bowing. Turning quickly on my heel and walked out of the room, my friends following behind me, and a triumphant smile plastered onto my face.
